Samuel L. Blumenfeld Literacy Foundation 7 Blueberry Road Windham, NH 03087
Founder & President: William McNally
The purpose of the Foundation is to restore high literacy in America by disseminating Dr. Blumenfeld’s effective and easy-to-use methods of teaching reading among parents and schools at little or no cost.
Dr. Blumenfeld’s pioneering work in creating a reading program that produces high literacy is what our country desperately needs in order to stop the destructive slide into illiteracy among a large segment of the American population.
The reading problem is now so severe that the National Endowment of the Arts issued an alarming report, Reading at Risk, in November 2007, revealing the precipitous decline of literacy in America. According to the Report, the number of 17-year-olds who never read for pleasure increased from 9 percent in 1984 to 19 percent in 2004. About half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 never read books for pleasure.
Endowment Chairman Dana Gioia stated: “This is a massive social problem. We are losing the majority of the new generation. They will not achieve anything close to their potential because of poor reading.” The survey found that only a third of high school seniors read at a proficient level. “And proficiency is not a high standard,” said Gioia. “We’re not asking them to be able to read Proust in the original. We’re talking about reading the daily newspaper.”
In other words, the continued decline of literacy skills among Americans endangers our nation culturally as well as economically. How can we compete with nations like India and China who are teaching their students to read English well? How can a person survive in our highly literate culture with poor reading skills?
The aim of the SAMUEL L. BLUMENFELD LITERACY FOUNDATION is to make America aware that low literacy is not an option for us, and that there is an effective, inexpensive way to restore high literacy by using the proper teaching methods. We have recently published "Phonics for Success - The Road to High Literacy Made Easy!" available on Amazon.com.
